Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey has donated $250,000 (€162,000) of his own money to a hospital in his hometown.

Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey has donated $250,000 (€162,000) of his own money to a hospital in his hometown.

The cash will go towards a new cancer centre at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine.

The new facility, called the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, will open on 31 March and will be managed by the actor's sister Mary.

Dempsey, 42, was born in the hospital and his mother Amanda has been successfully treated there for ovarian cancer, reports PageSix.com.
