‘The Last Legion’ looks like pared-down ‘Gladiator’.

‘The Last Legion’ (Momentum, €24.99) combines a swords-and-sorcery epic to minimal effect.

The problem is not so much with the plot, but the scale of battle scenes, which make this look like a pared-down ‘Gladiator’.

Would-be emperor Romulus Augustus has his empire snatched away when the Goths capture Rome.

Imprisoned in Capri where he finds Caesar’s magical sword, his shaman Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley) and bodyguard Aurelius (Colin Firth) help him escape to Britannia, where the last Roman legion is located.
