Veteran actor Paul Newman is to make his debut as a theatre director at the age of 83.

The 'Cool Hand Luke' star will direct a stage version of John Steinbeck's novel 'Of Mice And Men' at the Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut in October.

Newman, who has experience directing movies and TV shows, has never taken charge of a stage production before.

The actor's wife Joanne Woodward is artistic director at the Westport Country Playhouse, and Newman starred in a phenomenally successful play of 'Out Town' at the venue in 2002.
