Pilger documentary on US democracy worth a look
John Pilger’s crusading journalism and TV documentaries have frequently enthralled and repelled.
He courts controversy, which shows he does hit the right nerve, but his anti-American views, particularly on US foreign policy have often been overzealous to his detriment.
'The War On Democracy' (Dogwouf, €24.99) follows the same theme, particularly on how the US treats South American nations.
While Pilger’s style is sometimes too much in your face and lacks the popular touch of Michael Moore, he does hit the nail on the head occasionally. The danger of interviewing someone like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, however, is assuming he’s more democratic than George Bush.
And Pilger gives him far too easy a ride in this interview. However, for anyone interested in current affairs this is worth checking out.
