Things We Lost in the Fire

Director: Susanne Bier

Cast: David Duchovny, Halle Berry, Benicio del Torro

Duchovny made his name in the TV X-Files series and followed it with a collection of often – too often – indifferent films, but he comes into his own in this so-so drama.

It’s not that the excellent cast doesn’t produce the goods; it’s just that the storyline somehow doesn’t live up to its own ambitions.

Duchovny plays Brian, a man who is killed while trying to help a woman being battered. His wife (Berry) for some strange reason invites hubby’s druggy friend Del Torro to come and stay … and reflect on Brian’s life, seen in flashback.

The film doesn’t, though, manage to deliver the sympathy or pathos we might have expected.

But Duchovny is excellent.
