Penn, taking a true story about a man (Hirsch) who gives everything up to seek a new life in the wilderness, fashions a curious, yet endlessly fascinating, film of great visual beauty and deep human understanding.
Penn proves himself a remarkable director with a tale that, initially, seems carelessly unstructured but ultimately richly rewarding. He is rewarded in kind by a fine cast whose parade of off-beat characters lends a depth and originality to a most unusual film.
