Winehouse wins MTV award, but struggles on stage

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse was a winner at the MTV Europe Music Awards tonight, but struggled when performing on stage.

The 'Rehab' singer received the Artists’ Choice award, chosen by fellow musicians.

A last-minute addition to the bill for the ceremony in Munich, Winehouse, appearing to slur much of her vocals and appeared disorientated when performing her hit 'Back to Black'.

Her win follows a troubled few months in which she was admitted to hospital with a drug-induced seizure, spent time in a rehab clinic and was involved in several public bust-ups with husbnd Blake Fielder-Civil.

Securing her for tonight’s ceremony was a coup for organisers – in September she cancelled an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas while she received treatment for her various problems.

The 24-year-old star was nominated in three other categories – Best UK & Ireland Act, Album of the Year for Back To Black and Most Addictive Track for Rehab – but failed to win.

She was not the only hellraising star to grace the EMAs - Pete Doherty and his band Babyshambles were among the performers.

Doherty was handed a suspended jail sentence on Monday for a string of drug and motoring offences, and appeared to be on his best behaviour for the awards.

Despite a night on the tiles in Munich on Tuesday night with a Kate Moss lookalike, he turned up on time for his MTV rehearsal yesterday.

A show insider said: “He was punctual, behaved professionally and was charming to everyone. We were pleasantly surprised.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony from Munich’s Olympiahalle.

Muse were voted Best UK & Ireland Act and Best Headliners for their live performances.

Avril Lavigne was also a double winner, picking up Best Solo Artist and Most Addictive Track for 'Girlfriend'.

Rihanna, who topped the UK chart for 10 weeks with monster hit Umbrella, was named Best Urban Act.

Nelly Furtado won Album of the Year for Loose and Linkin Park were named Band of 2007.

Homegrown rock group Tokio Hotel received the award for Best International Act.
