Mr Brooks movie doesn’t click into top gear

Mr Brooks movie doesn’t click into top gear

Mr Brooks

Director: Bruce A. Evans

Cast: Kevin Costner, William Hurt, Demi Moore, Dane Cook

Cert: 16

Nice Mr Brooks (Costner) is your average family man, winner even of a ‘decent neighbour’ award … only he has an unusual hobby: he kills people with his pal William Hurt, in much the same way as a couple of guys go bowling or cheer on the local Rovers.

While out on a shooting spree Mr Brooks is spotted and blackmailed (by Cook). Mr Brooks kidnaps the blackmailer and takes him on his next job …. Cop Moore is hot on the trail.

So far so good-ish. The problem is that an undercooked script hangs a question mark over what sort of film we’re watching. There are brief moments when the film threatens to catch fire, some passable one-liners but somehow it just doesn’t click into top gear.

Star Rating: 2/5
