Paul Newman donates $40k to breast care centre
Hollywood legend Paul Newman is funding the fight against cancer in the UK with a £20,000 ($40,000) donation to an NHS hospital trust.
The Oscar winner has given $40,000 to the Singleton Hospital Breast Care Centre, in Swansea, south Wales.
Newman’s celebrated salad salsa and a wide array of other tasty organic food stuffs is directly funding the donation.
The star set up a food company called Newman’s Own in 1982 and pays all profits and royalties into his Newman’s Own Foundation.
Over the last quarter of a century it has donated $200m to thousands of educational and charitable schemes worldwide.
But Newman, star of film classics such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, had a special reason for the donation to Swansea NHS Trust.
His daughter Nell is married to Gary Irving, whose mother Sue Proctor has been receiving treatment for breast cancer at the Swansea centre since being diagnosed in 2003.
Mrs Proctor, 62, of Cockett, Swansea, said: “I’m chuffed that we’ve been able to give some money and thanks to the centre and all the staff who work there.
“They have been fantastic to me and the follow-up treatment has been amazing.”
Mike Chare, consultant surgeon at Singleton Hospital, added: “Not only is this a huge financial boost for our service but a significant endorsement of the work of all our staff.
“Mrs Proctor is an extremely friendly and generous person and we thank her very much for all her help in receiving this donation.”
