The big screen remake of Dallas is to be turned into a comedy.

The film was originally intended as a blockbuster directed by Gurinder Chadha, the woman behind 'Bend It Like Beckham' .

But she has left the project and been replaced by new director Betty Thomas, who is best known for spoof movie 'The Brady Bunch' and a slapstick version of 'Dr Doolittle', according to Variety magazine.

The 65m (€47.6m) budget is likely to be slashed now that the film is playing for laughs.

John Travolta is still on board to play oil tycoon JR Ewing, but Jennifer Lopez dropped out of playing Sue Ellen.

Other names linked to the project include Luke Wilson as Bobby Ewing and Shirley MacLaine as Miss Ellie.

Filming is expected to start in January.
