The glasses John Lennon wore on a 1966 Beatles tour of Japan have sparked a bidding frenzy in cyberspace after reaching $1.5 million (€1m) at auction.

Online auction house 991.com has been inundated with bids from Lennon fans keen to claim the glass-less spectacles, which the late rocker gave to the Fab Four's translator as a gift.

Until recently, the glasses belonged to an American collector.

Bidding for the item is open until July 31.
