ITV1 is to screen a fly-on-the-wall documentary revealing how author JK Rowling wrote her final Harry Potter book.

The channel has been granted exclusive access to the writer over the past 12 months.

Viewers will see her putting the finishing touches to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final instalment about the schoolboy wizard.

Rowling has already revealed she broke down and “absolutely howled” when she finished one chapter.

A Year In The Life... JK Rowling will air this autumn.

It is a coup for ITV1 as the author gives few interviews and fiercely guards her private life.

The documentary is one of the highlight’s of the channel’s autumn season.

There will be an emphasis on quality drama.

Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe will star as Rudyard Kipling’s son in My Boy Jack, with Sex And The City actress Kim Cattrall as his mother.

Big-budget costume dramas will include adaptations of Charles Dickens’s The Old Curiosity Shop (starring Sir Derek Jacobi as Grandfather) and the EM Forster classic A Room With A View (featuring Timothy Spall and his son Rafe).

Helen McCrory will play a 21st century female Dr Frankenstein.

In entertainment, The X Factor is back with new presenter Dermot O’Leary and judge Dannii Minogue, while Ant and Dec return with Saturday Night Takeaway and another series of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Marco Pierre White will take over the new series of Hell’s Kitchen.

Elton John: Me, Myself and I will see the pop star take viewers on a “flamboyant, intimate and entertaining journey through his colourful life”.
