A charming coming-to-America tale of an Italian family at the turn of the last century, fetching up at New York's Ellis Island and facing the ordeal of making it past the barriers to the promised land.

It is a story told with honesty and compassion and it marks a high point for the Italian cinema, somewhat lackluster of late, thanks to the detailed and observant directing of Crialese.
