Scotland's inaugural 'Green' Festival attracts 10,000

Pop star K T Tunstall celebrated her birthday today – as the main attraction for thousands of fans.

The singer/songwriter, who has turned 32, is headlining the inaugural Outsider Festival in the Scottish Highlands.

It’s the first time she has topped the bill at a major musical event.

K T will take to the stage tonight in front of 10,000 fans who have descended on a park just outside Aviemore.

The three-day festival has been billed as one of the greenest in the UK, and features outdoor events like canoeing and climbing as well as world class music.

Environmentally friendly K T, who hit the big time in 2005 with her triple platinum album “Eye to the Telescope”, said it was a real honour to be headlining an event on her birthday – especially one with such a green focus.

“It’s really, really brilliant for me,” she said.

“I can’t imagine doing anything better.

“It’s great to be part of something that’s new, and a huge compliment to have been asked to headline.

“I’m also really pleased about the green aspects here because it’s such an important part of my life.”

The St Andrews-born star is helping to drive the climate change agenda among her rock and roll colleagues.

She is famous for travelling to gigs as light as possible, and has used renewable sources to furnish her house in London.

Her new album “Drastic Fantastic” is out in September this year. K T said: “It’s an apt description of my life in the past three years.

“It’s been totally amazing.

“I’m playing at Glastonbury tomorrow and I’m off to Japan on Monday.

“It’s been non-stop but I’m having a great time.”

K T paid tribute to the crowd who braved near constant rain today.

Tomorrow sees New Zealand legends Crowded House close the festival.

The band – known for apt songs such as Four Seasons in One Day – are making their first Scottish appearance since reforming earlier this year.

The festival will also see Lord Steele host a debate on whether technology can beat climate change.
