Warhol painting goes for $72m

An Andy Warhol painting sold for more than at a US auction in New York.

The selling price was four times higher than the last price fetched at an auction of the pop artist’s work, Christie’s said.

Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) – part of Warhol’s 1963 series that drew on photographs of fatal accidents – went for $71.7 m (€52.5m) yesterday, Christie’s said. There was no immediate information about the buyer.

Warhol, a controversial figure during his lifetime, died in 1987.
