Anyone fed up with CSI and its derivative shows should check out New Tricks Series 3 (Acorn, €35.95), where a bunch of oldie detectives (Amanda Redman, James Bolam, Alun Armstrong and Densi Waterman) set about solving crimes with old-fashioned police methods and less of the old flashy forensics.

A fine cast helps to get to the bottom of some tricky cases, but Roy Mitchell’s series is the better for being a welcome antidote to American cop shows.
