A Scottish beauty queen has apologised after calling Irish singer/actress Samanth Mumba a "monkey", insisting the insult was not meant to be racist.

Miss Scotland Nicola McLean made the insult on Radio Clyde 1's breakfast show on 9 March, which many critics have condoned as racism.

McLean was asked if she thought Irish-Zambian star was attractive, to which she replied, "I think she looks like a monkey."

In a statement, McLean says: "I was trying to be funny and I meant absolutely no harm, nor did I intend to offend anyone by this comment.

"I am not a racist and I do not condone racist behaviour of any kind and wish to apologise to Samantha Mumba and the Radio Clyde listeners personally."
