Becoming Jane

Director: Julian Jarrold

Cast: Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, James Cromwell, Julie Walters

Cert: PG

We can’t get enough of Ms Austen, either from screen versions of her costume romances or from versions – real and otherwise – of her life.

This one, with Hathaway as the young Jane and McAvoy as a dashing Irish cad who reckons her writing could benefit from some hands-on experience, is a little charmer.

The emphasis is, alas, on the little. It’s a nice little film but it doesn’t set us alight. It’s a slight little film that merely satisfies without adding much by way of cherries and cream.

The playing is good but much more meat is required on the bones.
