Letters from Iwo Jima

Director: Clint Eastwood

Cast: Kazunari Ninomiya, Ken Watanabe, Tsuyoshi Ihara

Cert: 15

The companion piece to the much-lauded Flags Of Our Fathers, Eastwood’s memorable story of the iconic raising of the Stars-and-Stripes during the bloody WW2 Pacific battle.

This film, equally excellent, tells the story from the Japanese side, as unearthed in letters found many years later.

Eastwood succeeds in telling a harrowing and honest story of soldiers – albeit enemy soldiers – suffering in equal amount to the Americans, with absolutely no hope of being saved.

It is, then, a deeply moving story.

Star Rating: 4/5
