Too many images, too much tumbling of visual delights – however much they captivate and astound – mars what is otherwise as fine a film as has come our way in months.

At its heart this is a film where the characters and plotline are swamped by the sheer pictorial imagination.

The story concerns Bernal’s love for fellow-worker Gainsbourg, who might be more interested if only he could sort out the reality of his life from the unreality.

It is a beautiful film to look at, if not to quite understand.
