Things are going from bad to worse for the sympathetic character played by the always excellent Smith: he's struggling in a dead-end sales job trying to make ends meet, abandons his family and attempts to get his life back under control.

So does he make it through the difficult stock broking training programme he enlists in? Does he find the pot at the end of the rainbow?

And while we await the outcome of his personal journey there is never a moment when we are not on his side.

That’s due to the controlled performance of Smith … who might well be alongside Whitaker in the race for the Oscar tape.
