Jared Leto piled on so much weight to play John Lennon's killer Mark David Chapman in a new film doctors were seriously worried about his cholesterol.

The Panic Room star guzzled two cartons of ice-cream daily to play the chubby assassin in Chapter 27, and gained 65 pounds in the process.

As a result, Leto suffered from gout and his cholesterol levels shot up.

"My cholesterol was so high they (doctors) wanted to put me on Lipitor (prescription cholesterol medication)," he said.

"I took a wheelchair to set every morning because I couldn't walk more than a few feet without excruciating pain."
