Channel 4 launches internet download service
Viewers of Channel 4 will be able to catch up with their favourite programmes by downloading them from the internet from today.
The British broadcaster has launched an online service which allows people to get most of the channel’s programmes for up to 30 days after transmission.
It is believed to be the first UK broadcaster to offer all its home-grown programming for viewers on demand.
Prices for each programme will start at 99p (€1.46) and the agreement covers all UK-made shows commissioned since June.
Much of the channel’s previous output is also being made available from its archives, as well as some imported shows like Desperate Housewives.
Each programme will stay on people’s computers for 48 hours from the first time they start to watch it.
Selected films will also be available under the same terms at £1.99 (€2.95).
Earlier this week, telecoms giant BT launched its new broadband TV service.
The company is bidding to take on cable and satellite operators, such as Sky, as well as the local video shop with its on-demand home entertainment system.
BT Vision offers customers a library of on-demand TV shows and films, as well as 40 Freeview channels, without having to pay a monthly subscription.
