An aristocrat, Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), mechanic/officer (Jean Gabin) and Jewish banker (Marcel Dalio), are captured and find themselves stuck in a fortress run by Van Rauffenstein (Erich Von Stroheim).
