Campaigning rocker Bob Geldof's Live 8 concerts cost a staggering $14.6 million (€12m) to stage, accounts have revealed.

The 10 gigs held across the world in July 2005 were aimed at promoting awareness and putting pressure on world leaders at the G8 summit to end poverty in Africa.

Despite the costs, organisers Geldof and Harvey Goldsmith were left with a $4.7 million (€4m) profit from the concerts, which was watched by three billion people.

Those profits, raised from sponsorship, TV rights, merchandise and hospitality, went to the Band Aid trust, which handled the millions made by the 1985 Live Aid gigs.
