Haneke too clever for his own good?

When successful chat show host Georges Laurent (Daniel Auteuil) starts receiving videos in the post showing his family’s home is being watched he is, unsurprisingly, disturbed.

As the videos and the accompanying drawings become more menacing, his relationship with his wife Anne (Juliet Binoche) suffers. Georges suspects he knows who the perpetrator might be and from there events take a bizarre turn.

Unfortunately, director Michael Haneke’s handling of Hidden / Caché, (Artifical Eye, €21.99) loses its way, and the ending seems somewhat improbable, which is a pity because Auteuil and Binoche are, as usual, excellent.

Perhaps Haneke was being too clever for his own good. Check out the interview as he expounds on this exposition of guilt, and a 30-minute making-of featurette.

DramaStar Rating: 4/5.
