Mathieu Kassovitz’s masterly film is seen through the lives of Vinz (Vincent Cassel), a jew, Hubert (Hubert Kounde), a black, and arab Said (Said Taghmaoui). Thug Vinz threatens retaliation should a friend, injured by police, die. As the drama we see all are victims of an uncaring society.

Dark, menacing and illuminating about the other side of Parisian ghettoes, Kassovitz’s work, shot in black and white, leaves an indelible mark.

This three-disc edition includes a lengthy documentary to mark the film’s 10th anniversary, the original soundtrack and a director’s audio commentary.

DramaStar Rating: 5/5.
