David Beckham’s wife Victoria believes England can win the World Cup, despite Wayne Rooney’s foot injury.
The former Spice Girls singer said everyone was feeling “really positive” about the team’s chances.
Speaking at a ball for Anglomania, a new exhibition celebrating British fashion in New York, she also named Kate Moss as the world’s top style icon and revealed she had been upset by reports she did not like life in Spain.
Rooney, widely seen as England’s most talented player, broke a metatarsal in his right foot during Manchester United’s defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The injury is expected to keep him out for six weeks – the period of time between now and the start of the World Cup – to the dismay of fans.
But asked how her husband saw England’s chances for the tournament, Victoria said: “I think everybody’s feeling really positive.
“I’m very, very excited about it. I think we can win it.”
England captain Beckham’s World Cup hopes were hit by a metatarsal injury ahead of the 2002 tournament.
Victoria, formerly known as Posh Spice, rejected the suggestion that she was Britain’s most fashionable citizen.
“For me, the biggest style icon in the world has to be Kate Moss,” said the mother of three, who wore a flouncy red strapless dress by Roland Mouret.
“She always looks fantastic.”
Speaking about living in Spain, she told reporters: “I get frustrated when people say I don’t like it.
“Some people like to take the negative slant but David’s happy. I’m happy.
“We’ve got a great life out there and I’m getting more into the Spanish way of life, the late meals. The whole social thing is great.”
