Soap stars back Big Apple charity walk

A New York taxi has rolled up on to the cobbles of Coronation Street.

The yellow cab parked outside the Rovers Return to promote a charity walk in the Big Apple later this year, organised by The Children’s Society.

Samia Smith (Maria), Antony Cotton (Sean), Jennie McAlpine (Fiz) and Tupele Dorgu (Kelly) were among the names posing with the cab alongside former Street star Sally Lindsay (Shelley).

They are celebrating the charity’s 125th anniversary and promoting its Walk New York event, past Central Park, Fifth Avenue and the Empire State Building, in November.

Jennie said: “I am very happy to be supporting the Children’s Society.

“It is a charity I am very close to and it’s great to be able to welcome a New York taxi cab on to the cobbles for such a good cause.”

The stars of fellow ITV soap Emmerdale and former ER actress Alex Kingston have also been supporting the event.

Edward Rudolf founded the Church of England Waifs and Strays Society, now The Children’s Society, in 1881 after discovering two children, who used to attend his Sunday School, begging for food on the street.
