Paul McCartney's wife Heather Mills McCartney is recovering in a wheelchair after undergoing a rare surgical procedure to resolve complications with her amputated leg.

The former model, who lost the lower part of her leg after a motorcycle accident in 1993, had 'revision amputation' last Monday to re-attach muscle tissue to her bone.

The animal rights campaigner is currently wheelchair-bound and recovering at home with the Beatles star, and is expected to be on crutches for at least two months.

On Saturday night a spokesperson confirmed: "It is a major operation but she is fine. It has been a success. She's in a wheelchair - but out of hospital.

"Heather has been putting off having the operation, but she couldn't put it off any longer. Paul has been very supportive. She will spend the next few weeks recuperating."
