Speaking of opera, this is the screen version of a Pulitzer and Tony winning musical, based on the always-wonderful Puccini opera La Boheme.

La Boh wasn't exactly a laugh-in - tiny frozen hands, coughing fits, poor Mimi snuffing it in a cold attic - and nor is this downbeat adaptation of New York deadbeats.

It is, though, a powerful and, on Broadway, successful production even if it hasn't really been truly translated from stage to screen.
