Bergman swansong a masterclass

Ingmar Bergman has made a welcome return to film with Saraband (Tartan, €21.99), and while this is his last feature, it demonstrates yet again his originality.

Reuniting the cast of Scenes From A Marriage, it examines the relationship of Marianne (Liv Ullmann) and her ex-husband Johan (Erland Josephson), who meet 30 years later, and the rivalry Johan and his son have over his grand child.

As always with Bergman this is a masterclass in the study of relationships and is both powerful and moving. Extras are limited to a ‘making of’ feature. Also out from Tartan is another Bergman drama, After The Rehearsal (€21.99).
