Director accused Douglas of using drugs

Michael Douglas was confronted by Oliver Stone while filming Wall Street, because the famed director believed the actor was using drugs.

Stone felt Douglas was struggling with the role of Gordon Gekko and thought drug use could be cause of his lacklustre performance.

Douglas says: "After the second week, Oliver came into my trailer and asked me if I was OK. I said yes and then he asked me if I was doing drugs and I said no.

"Then I asked him why he asked that question. He replied, 'Because you look as if you've never acted a day in your life.'

"I had never looked at the dailies (footage from each day's shoot), because I'm so critical of my work, but I went to see them then.

"I was doing soap-opera acting where you stare intensely at your scene partner and then reach for the lines in the back of your head.

"Oliver wasn't afraid for me to be p**sed at him throughout the film if it meant I'd work that much harder.

"I was p**sed and scared making that movie, and it was out of fear and insecurity that I responded to Oliver's challenge to be someone he could count on in the trenches with him."

After Stone's intervention, Douglas went on to win the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the film.
