Brokeback Mountain wins top film at gay media awards
Brokeback Mountain, the story of a troubled love affair between two cowboys, has taken the top film prize from a gay organisation that monitors the media.
New York-based The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation presented the award yesterday at a ceremony to recognise mainstream media for their “fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community”, the group said in a statement.
Brokeback Mountain has won several awards and was considered a front-runner for the best-picture Oscar but lost out to Crash at the Academy Awards.
Other winners at the GLAAD awards included Newsweek for magazine reporting; The Oprah Winfrey Show for an episode focused on gay people’s coming-out stories; USA Today for newspaper coverage; and Melissa Etheridge for best music artist.
