The Pink Panther is a bit off colour
The Pink Panther
Shawn Levy
Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, Beyonce Knowles, Jean Reno
It seems that the recent career of Martin has been one step forward and two back. Certainly he seems to have lost – or, hopefully, merely misplaced – his previous quality and sparkle.
He is at his best when tackling films that are original. He is not at his best when reviving much-loved characters (recall his awful Bilko?).
Here he is in a so-so re-make of the classic l964 Peter Sellers film featuring Clouseau, the worst detective in history.
This isn’t altogether a failure, it is very funny in parts and Martin exhibits a lot of charm … it’s just the sort of film that leaves you wondering why it was necessary to make … because it wasn’t.
3/5
