Spielberg war film two-disc edition released
Anyone who has ever read JG Ballard’s Empire of the Sun (Warner, 21.99) should pick up a copy of this Steven Spielberg two-disc edition.
Christian Bale gives a wonderfully engaging performance as schoolboy Jim Graham who becomes separated from his parents as the Japanese invade Shanghai in 1941. He meets up with wiseguy Basie (John Malkovich) and spends four years learning to growing up on the streets and in a Japanese war camp. A beautiful film with the magical Spielberg touch.
Surprisingly, there is little attempt to further our understanding of the filmmaking process involved with in the film, as the only extra, apart from a trailer, is The China Odyssey, a fine documentary on the Japanese invasion of China.
Hopefully, Spielberg will start adding audio commentary to his many DVD titles one of these days.
