What is it with sums that gets moviemakers so excited?
We’ve had several films about mathematics and how it can drive people crazy, and here’s another one. Curious!
So here we meet Paltrow, whose genius father has gone wonkers and died, leaving her with the fear that she will follow.
And there’s her pushy sister – the very busy Davis – and there’s her father’s former pupil (Gyllenhaal) who is hoping to find some numerical gem that will transform his life.
Only when he does find in her father’s papers, she confesses it was actually her theorem.
It’s not a bad film at all – the cast, particularly Paltrow, is universally excellent – it’s just that, ultimately the sums don’t quite add up.
