Gyllenhaal gives Oscar memento to mother

Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal is giving his Academy Award nominee memento sweatshirt to his mother to make up for her own Oscar loss in 1989.

The star's mother, Naomi Foner, was nominated as Best Screenwriter for Running on Empty, but didn't take home the award.

Gyllenhaal was nine years old when his mother was nominated for a Golden Globe, as well as an Oscar, and remembers the nervous excitement of watching the ceremonies.

He recalls: "I was watching The Globes clutching a pillow until mom's name was called as the winner.

"When the Academy Awards came around, I clutched the same pillow, but when her name wasn't called, I threw it across the floor."
