The Rolling Stones tonight branded censorship of supposedly sexually explicit lyrics at their US Super Bowl performance “absolutely ridiculous and completely unnecessary“.

Lyrics in two of the three songs the band played were silenced in the TV broadcast of the half-time show by ABC, which was watched by millions around the world.

A spokesman for the band said: “The Rolling Stones thought the censorship of their songs by the NFL/ABC was absolutely ridiculous and completely unnecessary.”
