The New World

Director: Terrence Malick

Cast: Colin Farrell, Christian Bale, Ben Chaplin, Christopher Plummer, Q'Orianka Kilcher

Malick, that most lyrically visual of directors, first started writing this story of Captain John Smith and the 17th century discovery of America in the l970s.

Forget that America, so the various claims go, was discovered by the Vikings, the Irish, almost everybody else - and if it was newly discovered, how come there were all those Indians already there - and just enjoy what is a beautiful looking film with a fine central performance from Farrell as Smith.

You won't really discover anything new about the discovery but you will, if you appreciate a well-made film, enjoy yourself.

Star Rating: 4/5
