Doherty arrested twice in one day

Rocker Pete Doherty was arrested for a second time yesterday on suspicion of possessing of drugs - just hours after being released from custody.

The Babyshambles singer, and ex-boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss, was stopped by police in east London at 5.40am yesterday after they became concerned about his erratic driving.

The officers recovered substances from Doherty's person following a search and he was taken to an East London police station for questioning. He was later released, but he was then stopped by police at 3.05pm whilst walking in Whitechapel.

A spokesperson says: "The officers were concerned he was under of influence of drugs and a subsequent search of him led to the recovery of a substance believed to be a Class A drug."

Doherty, who found himself in police custody again, was arrested in almost identical circumstances on similar charges on December 4 and January 14.

The singer's lawyer this week accused the police of unfairly treating Doherty because of his fame.

Sean Curran told a London court, where Doherty pleaded guilty to possessing heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and morphine stemming from his December 4 arrest: "The position is this, the police kept him in custody because he is Pete Doherty."
