Lost actor Dominic Monaghan has told how he wants to have children with his co-star girlfriend Evangeline Lilly, or adopt them like Angelina Jolie.

Monaghan, who plays heroin-addict rock star Charlie in the hit series, also spoke about his own drug experiences, describing some as “rewarding and sobering“.

Monaghan, 29, told USA Today he was inspired by the example of the late Beatle John Lennon to talk about his past experimentation with marijuana and hallucinogens.

“I came to understand that The Beatles grew a lot and understood a lot about themselves through taking certain drugs,” he said.

“There’s something very rewarding and sobering about getting involved with certain hallucinogens that strip away any sense of ego.”

But he stressed that he had did not condone the use of drugs and always steered clear of heroin, which he branded “the ultimate number-one nightmare“.

He said being in love made the temporary highs of drug-taking pale in significance.

Monaghan told the newspaper that in 26-year-old Lilly, with whom he has been for over a year, he had found the “muse” he had always looked for.

“It feels like I’m on the right track,” he added.

Talking about having children, he said: “We’ll see where I’m at at the end of Lost.

“Maybe one or two children of my own, and then what I really hope to do is adopt – perhaps a bunch of them.”

Monaghan, who first found fame as Patricia Routledge’s geeky teenage sidekick in Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, told the newspaper: “Abusing drugs is a mistake.

“But I’ve never felt that I’ve abused drugs. I’ve always used them. For me, it’s always been an education, and I’ve always had a pen and paper with me whenever I’ve been involved in any kind of drugs... I think I have the ability to use it as a tool. Some people don’t.”
