Drama overcomes initial doubts
What to make of YES (Optimum, 24.99)?
Sally Potter’s dialogue is delivered in verse.
Pretentious nonsense or what? Well, if we can sit through a Shakespearean drama complete with original text (think Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet) then why can’t other directors try the same?
Joan Allen is trapped in a loveless marriage.
Her husband is having an affair, but they stay together for the sake of his career.
One day she meets a Lebanese doctor and they embark on a passionate affair which pushes them to the limits.
And then the fireworks begin. Despite my initial doubts, Potter carries this off with conviction.
