For once the special effects in this conventional demonic story make it worth watching, as does the acting of a first-rate cast.

The plot concerns Priest Wilkinson on trial for the legligent homicide of a young girl while under his care (Carpenter, the Emily of the title who believed she was possessed).

Linney plays the non-believing lawyer defending him in what becomes a thriller-horror-religious film.
