The singer, who died in 1977, generated $45m (€37.2m) for his estate this year through royalties.

It is the fifth consecutive year that Elvis has topped the list. Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz - who died in 2000 - was second, with $35m (€28.9m). Former Beatle John Lennon was at number three with $22m (€18.2m) in royalties while artist Andy Warhol was at number four with $16m (€13.2m).

Also included in the magazine's 13-strong list were Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Ray Charles and George Harrison.
