€80m needed to fund arts sector next year

The performing arts sector has set out its requests for Government funding next year.

The price tag being put on stage shows, opera, festivals and more in 2006 is nearly €80m.

The Arts Council said it has received more than 430 applications, many from first-time applicants, for grant aid.

The council's director, Mary Cloake, says it is vital that talent gets the necessary resources, and that it does not bode well for the economy or for society in general if the arts sector goes under-resourced.
