Tara Road

Director: Gillies MacKinnon

Cast: Andie MacDowell, Stephen Rea, Iain Glen, Olivia Williams, Brenda Fricker, Bronagh Gallagher

Cert: 12

A quality cast for a Maeve Binchy story set in the world of reality-type TV, in which an American and an Irish women, facing personal turmoil, swap lifestyles.

The delicious MacDowell is the New Englander and Williams the Dubliner, with Glen as the layabout Irish husband; wildly stereotyped, but effective enough; but somehow the film lacks real bite.

There are far too many contrived funny moments which appear to have been thrown in just to keep the weak plot plodding along. There is always the notion that a sharper drama might have been made of the story, sort of fish-out-of-water style.
