Knightley won Bennet role on scruffiness

Director Joe Wright dismissed actress Keira Knightley as "too pretty" to play feisty Elizabeth Bennet in Pride And Prejudice - but changed his mind when he met her.

Wright had been fooled by airbrushed images of the slender British actress, but he soon discovered Knightley was ordinarily scruffy in her everyday appearance, and immediately awarded her the coveted role.

She says: "He realised I was a complete scruff and said: 'You're perfect.'"
