The Last Mitterand

Director: Robert Guediguian

Cast: Michael Bouquet, Jalil Lespert, Anne Cantineau

Cert: PG

A curious, though intriguing, film made as a drama in a documentary style.

As both it works to perfection. Lespert plays a journalist who conducts a series of interviews with French president Francois Mitterand at the end of his term.

He finds it difficult pinning down one of Europe's most enigmatic politicians.

Bouquet plays Mitterand quite brilliantly: a man in personal decline, who intrigues and infuriates and is never quite cornered, who at the same time is anxious to build his place in history.

An unusual and clever film.

Star rating: 4/5.
