INXS in 'Pop Idol' search for singer
Rock group INXS has launched a reality television show to search for a new singer.
Viewers from around the globe will vote for their favourite contestant each week over the next three months.
In a similar format to Pop Idol, the three with the least votes will perform again before the remaining members of INXS choose who will get the boot.
The last man or woman standing will make an album with INXS and go on tour with the band, best known for hits such as What You Need and Need You Tonight.
But the Australian band insists it is not trying to replace lead vocalist Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997.
“What we really want is somebody who brings their own personality along and someone completely different,” said guitarist Tim Farriss.
“I think he’d think it was kind of funny in a good way.
“But in another way, it’s really an organic way to find a new singer. It’s the best way we could think of.”
The eight female and seven male hopefuls, from the US, Canada and Australia, are holed up in a Hollywood mansion and their exploits will be aired on the show three nights a week in the US.
An omnibus edition will be broadcast in the UK every Sunday on VH1.
Rock Star: INXS is hosted by Dave Navarro, a former guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction, and model Brooke Burke.
